To vet an overseas supplier, verify six things before you commit: that the company legally exists, that it is financially sound, who really owns and controls it, that it is not sanctioned or subject to adverse media, that it has the operational capacity to deliver, and that its trading references check out. Each should be confirmed against a primary source, not the supplier's own website.

Why vetting matters more with overseas suppliers

Distance hides risk. A supplier in another jurisdiction may be perfectly legitimate, or may be a trading name with no real operation behind it — and the usual signals you rely on at home (a known reputation, a physical presence you can visit) are missing. Vetting replaces those missing signals with evidence.

The checklist

Two failure modes to watch for

The first is the intermediary posing as a producer — common in commodity and produce trades, where a broker presents itself as the grower or manufacturer. The second is undisclosed sub-contracting, where the supplier you vetted quietly passes your order to a third party you never checked. Both are found by verifying capacity and ownership against primary sources.

When to bring in help

If the order is large, the jurisdiction is unfamiliar, or the relationship will be ongoing, independent verification pays for itself many times over. Our supplier vetting & due diligence service delivers a documented assessment with a risk rating and a clear recommendation, usually within ten working days.
