Financing a shipment means matching an instrument to three things: how much the two parties trust each other, how risky the buyer's country is, and how long the cash is tied up between order and payment. Get that match right and a trade that looked impossible on cash terms becomes routine.

The main instruments

What banks and insurers actually look for

Trade financiers fund transactions, not promises. They test a deal against a consistent set of questions: is there a signed contract with clear delivery and payment terms; are buyer and seller identifiable, sanctions-screened and creditworthy; will the goods ship with documents that can be presented clean — invoice, bill of lading, certificate of origin, inspection certificate, insurance; is the country risk insurable; and does the cash-flow timeline work? A clear answer to each is what separates a financeable trade from a hopeful one.

How to make a trade financeable

Common pitfalls

The recurring mistakes are accepting a letter of credit with conditions the seller cannot meet, shipping before the LC is issued, mismatched document details, ignoring the days a confirming bank needs, and relying on a single counterparty whose default would sink the trade. Each is avoidable with preparation.
